We will be staying at Halse farm Camping and Caravan site near the village of Winsford in the heart of the moor www.halsefarm.co.uk/index.php
Don't be put off by the word caravan site as this is a peaceful family run campsite adjacent to the moor on a working farm producing beef cattle and sheep. It is surrounded by an abundance of wildlife including the endangered Exmoor ponies which live wild on nearby Winsford Hill. The site has a quality clean heated toilet block with free hot showers and costs £7.50 per person per night.
You can walk straight out of the gate onto Winsford Hill and nearby long distance paths include theTwo Moors Way, Exe Valley Way and Samaritans Way.
Although this is not an area particularly noted for its climbing there is the Valley of Rocks at Lynton about 15 miles away, which span the grades from beginner level and also the beaches of Lynmouth which apparently provide a fine area for bouldering.
The village of Winsford is a mile away by road or slightly further if you choose to walk by footpath. The local thatched pub is called the Royal Oak and serves bar and restaurant meals. The village also contains tea rooms for the inevitable cream tea and also a garage for repairs if your car happens to break down!
