Stopoffs

Favourite Motorway Stopoffs

Here are a few places that Rockhoppers often end up stopping on the long journeys to the mountains to eat / drink coffee / buy provisions. Feel free to contribute more!

The Hollies

Proper traditional transport caff doing massive plates of greasy food and big cups of tea for not much money. Definitely trucker-oriented but they don't mind the odd carload of climbers as well. Expect funny looks if you ask for a skinny decaf latte, a panini, or any form of salad.
Location - on the A5, near junction 12 on the M6. Drive east from junction 12 for a minute and you're there.
Useful For - clogging your arteries on the way to and from the Lakes and Yorkshire. Hollies has been refurbished! (summer 2011) Still great food and prices ... but part of the refurbishment is to stop serving food at 10pm on weekdays - not good if you leave London late.

Telford Services

Actually, it's pretty rubbish, but lots of Rockhoppers seem to end up there on North Wales trips because they didn't stop anywhere on the M6 and then realized that Telford is the only motorway services left.
Location - M54, junction 4
Useful For - not much, really, but it's better than nothing.

Westmorland Farm Shops / Tebay Services

The poshest service station in the UK, incorporating an organic farm shop, really nice cafe and all sorts of lovely stuff.
Location - on the M6 near Penrith, between Junction 38 and 39
Useful for - if you leave London early in the morning for a Scotland trip, you normally get to Tebay for about lunchtime.

The Green Welly Stop, Tyndrum

Great cafe with nice cakes and good coffee or proper meals.
Location - on the A82 at Tyndrum. It's pretty well signposted.
Useful For - breaking up long drives through the West Highlands

Morrisons, Fort William and Penrith

Standard stops for food shopping on trips to the W highlands (Penrith) and NW highlands / Lochaber (Fort William).
Location - Penrith: just off the M6 at junction 40, near Penrith station
Fort William: just off the A82 at the roundabout near the station.
Useful For - super cheap pies, not having to share the car with 15 carrier bags all the way from London.

Llangollen chip shops

A change from service stations if you are going to reach Llangollen before about 11pm. Two on the main road as you pass through on the A5.
