Join us for a cosy autumn weekend at Howgills Barn, Kirkby Stephen, ideally placed between the Yorkshire Dales, the Howgill Fells, and the southern Lake District.
Hiking
The Howgills offer quieter hills and sweeping ridges, perfect for crisp autumn days out. Classic walks nearby include:
The Calf – the highest point in the Howgills, with expansive views towards the Lakes, the Pennines, and Morecambe Bay.
Cautley Spout – England’s highest waterfall above ground, reached via a scenic circular route.
Wild Boar Fell – a dramatic ridge walk overlooking the Eden Valley.
Lower-level options in the Lune Valley and limestone country around Kirkby Lonsdale.
Climbing
There are also good climbing options within reach:
Chapel-Le-Dale (limestone trad, mostly easier grades).
Hutton Roof (short limestone trad).
The southern Lakes and Yorkshire limestone crags are an easy drive away.
For wet-weather days, climbing walls in Kendal and Ingleton offer indoor options.
